Now is the time to do something about it!

Many gardeners throughout the United States are forced to deal with clay soils and the many challenges that entails i.e. poor drainage, surface crusting, limited root penetration, runoff and more. The addition of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate) in the fall months will improve soil structure. Over time,  multiple applications of gypsum improves the physical and chemical properties of the soil resulting in greater water penetration, increased soil aggregation (clumps of soil made up of sand, silt, and clay glued together by organic matter) and better soil stability. A second application in the spring at planting will also increase the effiency of your fertilizer and add much needed calcium and sulfur to the soil. University studies have shown that gypsum applications improve soil aggregation which is needed to provide suitable soil structure for root growth and air and water movement. Gypsum also improves the ability of soil to drain. Another advantage of gypsum is that it does not affect pH. If you have a clay problem, get on a program of gypsum applications in the fall and spring for great results in your garden! Happy Gardening!
